Same Day Consultations for Children Under 16

We understand that when a child becomes unwell, parents and carers want timely advice and support. Our practice is committed to ensuring that children under 16 with an acute (sudden or urgent) illness can be assessed promptly.

What we offer

Children under 16 who present with acute symptoms will be offered a same day consultation. This may be:

  • A telephone consultation with a clinician
  • A face-to-face appointment if clinically required

Our reception team may ask a few questions to help ensure your child is directed to the most appropriate clinician as quickly as possible.

What is considered an acute problem?

Examples include:

  • Fever or high temperature
  • Breathing difficulties (mild to moderate)
  • Rashes
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Earache or sore throat
  • Sudden worsening of an existing condition

How to access this service

  • Please contact the practice as early in the day as possible
  • Clearly state that the appointment is for a child under 16 with an urgent problem
  • Provide brief details of symptoms when asked

Important information

While we aim to see all acutely unwell children on the same day, appointment type (phone or face-to-face) will depend on clinical need and safety.

If your child is seriously unwell, please do not wait for a GP appointment:

  • Call 999 in an emergency
  • Contact NHS 111
